Bump proof locks are not only impossible to bump, they are also impossible to pick. All the bump proof locks listed on this page are also keyless locks. That is to say, the bump proof locks we offer are keyless in the sense that they do not have a lock cylinder of any kind.
Please note: "Bump proof locks" is a phrase that many in the door hardware industry are attributing to certain models, yet as of May 2007, there has not yet been an industry standard established for what constitutes a bump proof lock in the United States. Sport lock picking organizations, such as The Open Organisation Of Lockpickers a.k.a. TOOOL, have picked and bumped their way through locks previously thought of as high security locks. In 2006, TOOOL assisted the Dutch Consumer Reports a.k.a. Consumentenbond in opening the majority of 60 locks which had the "Dutch Police Seal of Approval for Secure Housing". Of the 60 locks attempted, 47 of them were successfully opened within 3 minutes with a bump key. An expert was used to bump open 47 of the locks, but of those 47 bumped open by an expert, Consumentenbond found that a layman could open 22 of those as well. Furthurmore, Consumentenbond also found that even though making a bump key for a "dimple" style lock was difficult to very difficult, they did find locks that could be opened within three minutes. They also tested five locks in which they found a feature that supposedly inhibited the use of a bump key, but were still able to open one of those five.
In a white paper written by Barry Wels & Rop Gonggrijp of TOOOL, it was discovered that some more expensive locks were actually easier to open because of the tight machine tolerances and hardness of materials used.
